Modern Design. Ancient Craft.
AfghanMade Carpets launches its first collection at The Rug Show@Javits 2013, New York, together with partnering companies Matt Camron, Oritop, Michaelian & Kohlberg, Ignacio Larrain, James Opie Collection and Eliko. Among some of the leading international carpet designers, these companies have partnered with AfghanMade Carpets to be the first to directly source their production of fine handmade carpets in Afghanistan.
As the global production of hand knotted carpets is declining, Afghanistan, with its highly skilled carpet weavers is well poised to become one of the major sources of new production with fine rugs from Afghanistan. AfghanMade Carpets is working to revitalize the Afghan carpet industry by facilitating the cooperative work of international rug importers and Afghan producers as part of an initiative promoting indigenous industries in Afghanistan.
Fritz Langauer of Oritop, a partnering company, states that “Afghan rugs have become the most modern and versatile.” He praises the Afghan industry’s ability to maintain old values with the use of hand-spun wool and natural dyes while embracing contemporary designs and colors.
James Opie, a partnering company, says he is proud to be connected with the work in Afghanistan as he is helping to create positive change as weavers now earn a fair living wage. He prefers to have his rugs woven in a “nation where weavers instinctively understand and ‘feel’ their work.”
